A Little Perspective

Pop Quiz: What US Senator sent a message to the Russian leadership suggesting that “the current threat is due to the President’s refusal to engage in any modification on his politics.” The Senator recommended that the people of the US be educated to see the need for “maintaining a true balance of power…in military terms.” This is an issue “which is quickly being distorted by the (President’s) administration.” The intent was to undermine the re-election of the US President.

The freedoms guaranteed under the Constitution are under assault by Democrats from coast to coast. The candidates for the presidency have made clear their authoritarian instincts and their janissaries at the state level are fully on board.

The Second Amendment

The right to keep and bear arms has been, for decades, a bugbear of the inaptly named “progressives” in the Democrat Party. The Supreme Court in the Heller case held that “(t)he Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home.” QED…unless you are a Democrat.

Take, for example, Grand Kleagle Ralph Northam, aka Governor of the once great State of Virginia and his efforts to undermine this individual right. What motivates elected leaders of his ilk to remove guns from the hands of law abiding citizens? It is clear they do not understand the importance of the inclusion of the Second Amendment in the Bill of Rights.

At the start of the American Revolution there was a brief kerfuffle between a small group of colonials and the mighty British at Lexington and Concord. After suffering a bloodied nose the British retreated to Boston and took control of the city. One of the first orders of business was the confiscation of all firearms owned by the citizenry. The intent was to ensure that any potential opposition was docile and easily controlled. This was fresh in the minds of the authors of the Constitution.

Disarming the people is a staple for authoritarian and totalitarian regimes. For example, in 1929 the Soviet government under Josef Stalin instituted a rigorous gun control program which action was followed by a genocidal elimination of the political opposition which had now been disarmed and rendered impotent.

In 1933, after Adolf Hitler seized power the Nazis used gun registration records to identify, disarm, and attack political opponents and Jews. Constitutional rights were suspended, and mass searches for and seizures of guns and dissident publications ensued. The government revoked gun licenses held by those they viewed as the “opposition. The people were powerless to deter the consolidation of power under Hitler and the result was devastating.

Not to be outdone China under Mao Zedong established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952 10,076,000 political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated in Kuomintang China. It proved difficult for people to stand up to tyranny once they had been disarmed.

Note that registration of firearms is the essential first step in the progressive program to ensure the people are reduced to being sheeple.

The First Amendment

Abuse of the First Amendment also has an interesting history in America. Unlike gun control it is difficult to find people who openly oppose restrictions of free speech. The Amendment states that the Congress shall make no law “abridging the freedom of speech”. (Note that the protection of religion precedes the right to free speech in the Amendment.) Yet there have been times when, despite the clear language of the Amendment, the government took action that directly abridged the free exercise of speech.

Under John Adams in 1798 the Congress passed the Alien and Sedition Acts which contained a provision that restricted speech that criticized the government or government officials.  The Acts were triggered by a fear that the French were exporting their more radical revolution to the United States. The actions of the Adams administration were strenuously opposed and ultimately ensured that Adams would be a one term president.

President Lincoln, during the Civil War, took a number of actions that clearly were in conflict with the protections given to free speech and press. For example he seized the telegraph lines and issued an order prohibiting the printing of war news about military movements without approval. Journalistic dispatches by mail or telegraph were all censored as part of the administration’s war efforts. People were arrested for wearing Confederate buttons and for singing Confederate songs.

Government officials at one point shut down the Chicago Times for excessively criticizing the Lincoln administration. Editors were arrested, papers were closed, and correspondents were banned from the fields of battle. In a very controversial move, Clement Vallindigham, a prominent Democratic member of Congress from Ohio, was arrested for making an anti-war political speech in his home state. Lincoln had the Congressman banished to the Confederacy.

Lincoln is generally forgiven for such unconstitutional actions because of the exigencies presented by the war.

In 1918 Woodrow Wilson signed into law a Sedition Act. The law restricted opposition to the entry of the United States into World War I. During the election of 1916 Wilson had campaigned strongly against US participation in the war effort. Eugene Debs was the Socialist candidate in that election and he supported Wilson’s position. But when Wilson reversed course he was intolerant of Debs and stated that “once the Congress of the United States declared war, silence on his [Debs] part would have been the proper course to pursue.” Wilson wrote, “…this man, Debs, stood behind the lines, sniping, attacking, and denouncing them.” He felt that being at war “must be regarded as wholly exceptional and that it is legitimate to regard things that would in ordinary circumstances be innocent as very dangerous to the public welfare.” Debs was sentenced to ten years in Federal prison but happily his sentence was commuted by Warren Harding after the war.

The Obama administration engaged in a vigorous attack on our free press. This was driven by his very thin skin and intolerance of criticism. In 2013 the Department of Justice issued subpoenas for phone records of reporters working for the Associated Press. He publicly attacked Fox News and blamed many bad things in the country on people watching Fox News. He tried to freeze out Fox News in multiple instances. His Justice Department spied extensively on Fox News reporter James Rosen in 2010, collecting his telephone records, tracking his movements in and out of the State Department and seizing two days of his personal emails. This was reported by a most unlikely source… the Washington Post.

Yet the press today gets the vapors when President Trump uses the term “fake news” in his tweets. We have heard nothing about subpoenas or eavesdropping being used by the Trump administration in their “war” against the media.

We must be vigilant against the erosion of our basic rights and we should be aware of the history of prior abuses by the government. As Franklin said “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”

Herewith a few observations on current events.

Adam Schiff has adopted a new theme song adapted from a Beatles classic: The Fool on the (Capitol) Hill.

It has been observed that the Mueller studiously avoided any discussion of the mysterious Joseph Mifsud an academic from Malta. Mifsud and Stefan Halper were the Zeligs of the Russian espionage spoof produced by CBC Productions (Comey, Brennan and Clapper). Mifsud did, however, play a vital role in the witch hunt against Trump. They need to interview this chap because he is the Maltese Fulcrum.

There is much being made of integrity challenged Lev Parnas and the left is feverishly trying to tie him to President Trump. There are apparently several pictures of Parnas and the President shaking hands at political events. There are literally thousands of such pictures taken with supporters during every campaign. With Parnas we are asked to draw a sinister conclusion. One wonders what we can conclude from the photographs of Rosalind Carter posing with John Wayne Gacy!

Answer to the pop quiz: The reference is to the late Senator Kennedy (brain cancer my foot) who contacted the administration of the equally late Y. V. Andropov (no brain cancer alleged) with a strategy for defeating Ronald Reagan in the 1984 election. The plan had no impact on the crushing defeat of Walter Mondull.
