Manager of the Year

On March 1, 2020 Jack Welch, former CEO of General Electric, passed away. In my years teaching college management classes I routinely ranked Welch among the best CEOs in the world. I spoke from firsthand experience. I had the privilege of making a number of presentations to Dr. Welch (he had a PhD) and I was in awe of his mental agility and ability to ask questions that defrocked the managerial pretenders who tried to dissemble on some issue or other. He could be rude and demeaning but he always allowed his managers to provide the rope with which they would hang themselves. The verdict was delivered in one simple sentence: ” (Insert name here) dies on this job.”

There were a number of occasions that we discussed the thought that Welch would have made a great US President. Pros: Bold, decisive, visionary and smart, way smart. Cons: Blunt, insulting, a checkered history with women and an intolerance of failure. Sound familiar?

We have had the opportunity to watch President Trump deal with the COVID-19 crisis and it has been instructive. The inspiration for this post came when I heard Mika Brzezinski render the judgment that Trump did not have the “mental capacity” to address an issue of this magnitude. Criticism from Brzezinski, an intellectual Pygmy, is certainly a humbling experience but one of Trump’s strengths is that he seems to be immune to such nattering nabobs of negativity (with thanks to Spiro Agnew). The point being that Trump is “managing” the issue rather than engaging in Obama-like pontification. In short I saw a Welchian approach and I was well pleased.

One component of my Management class was a module on leadership. Leadership was treated as a subset of management and there is a strong argument that we need a manager in the White House and not a “leader”. Politicians are incapable of management. Bloviation replete with glittering generalities is what passes for “taking on an issue” in Washington. The only thing I would trust Bill Clinton to “manage” would be a toga party.

The typical business textbook defines management as the attainment of organizational goals and objectives through “planning, organizing, leading and controlling organizational resources”. There is no extant record of a politician identifying “goals and objectives” because politics has a strong allergy to being bold and decisive. It is difficult to imagine Nancy Pelosi or Bernie Sanders as bold and decisive.

In fact, politics necessarily requires the reduction of complex systems to bite size cliches and sound bites. The global climate is, according to Al Gore, driven by the level of CO2 in the atmosphere despite the fact that human CO2 output is 0.00008% of the atmosphere. The global economy is treated as if it were a simple equation with 3 variables whereas it is actually comprised of an infinite number of variables..

People with business backgrounds have to operate in the infinitely complex world of capitalism and that experience is invaluable when you understand the threat posed by a world-wide pandemic. So Trump is actually better suited to lead now than a community organizer or career politician. It is not at all surprising that the likes of Mika B and Chuck Todd have no appreciation of Trump’s handling of the crisis. They crave simple solutions where none exist.

In a recent interview with Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases we got a glimpse of the “management” of the issue inside the White House. A manager must understand what resources he or she can bring to bear on the issue at hand. A manager must organize those resources to ensure an effective response. The leadership component is the final decision-making authority and a good manager does not avoid that responsibility. Fauci made clear that Trump was incisive in his questioning, relied on the expert opinions that were offered and took responsibility for the strategy devised by the team. Fauci acknowledged that he was impressed by Trump’s management of the process.

As I had observed on a number of occasions with Welch it was the management and not the leadership that carried the day. The thought of the intellectually challenged Hilliary Clinton handling this mess makes one appreciate the outcome in 2016. Management includes execution and accountability and Trump has embraced the process. The left will go broke underestimating Trump. Want some shock therapy…close your eyes and imagine Joe Biden trying to just understand the issue and, at the same time, remembering what state he is in. The Biden Presidency equivalent of walking and chewing gum.

Welch used a number of tools for improving the tangible success of management. One was a program called “Work Out”. A group of employees would be brought together to identify what should be done to fix a problem. For the first time in decades hourly employees had a place at the table and their voices were heard. Morale went up and problems were fixed with input from those who understood the nuts and bolts. Management was instructed to listen to those who actually made the system work. Work Out was a rousing success. The meeting described by Anthony Fauci sounded much like a GE Work Out and, according to Fauci, management, i.e Trump, listened and learned. The plan of attack was crafted by the team.

When the team adopts the plan the exercise in leadership will be a speech from the Oval Office communicating an honest assessment of the status and an optimistic vision of the response. Trump is the perfect person for that task. Perhaps we should look for these “management” traits in future Presidents.

Things to think about…

That smug, white-privilege smirk was…well offensive. More sobering is the fact that the Chinese communist government is requiring facial recognition on all electronic devices for the purpose of social scoring which will dictate the distribution of benefits and rewards. Smirk at Xi Jinping when he speaks and you may win a ticket to a reeducation camp. The glories of socialism.

    I will add my two cents. Jack Welch was many things that every leader tries to emulate. The most important and impactful is his focus on identifying talent and challenging it. Trump seems to pursue a similar tactic with the people that surround him – as evidenced by the rapid removal of those that don’t fit.

      I got to pitch Trump several times and what I most admired was his quick grasp of issues and his incisive questions. He managed rather than gave endless direction. I think Trump is much the same and that is what we need now. Politicians are utterly useless. Welch made only two mistakes that I really question: (1) Six Sigma and (2) the selection of Jeff Immelt as his successor. He never let deadwood remain in the management structure and I think he really encouraged thoughtful risk. One of the great CEOs in US history and I still think he would have been a great President.

    Bravo, a terrific treatise extolling the virtues of a business management approach to government vs the traditional career politician approach (meaning no prior experience doing anything valuable for society.)
    I would add one glaring missing element…the value of a quantitative background. Most (dare I say almost all) politicians (as well as journalists that report on them) have almost no skills or ability in simple mathematics! This tragic flaw was never better demonstrated than when the highly renowned Brian Williams announced on National TV that Bloomberg could have used his $500 million campaign money to give $1 million to every American, and have some left over. This lack of knowledge allows the likes of AOC and Bernie to innocently propose “free stuff” worth tens of trillions of dollars, because they have no idea how much that is. A Jack Welch fundamental tenet was :measure it and it will get better”, a concept utterly foreign to Washington DC’s traditional inhabitants.

      Great points. You may find in an earlier post that I said that Fauxchontas was going to appoint Rumpelstiltskin as her Treasury Secretary. Bernie is clearly the product of Common Core math. If he ever wins he will set about designing the first fully electronic abacus. Milton Friedman once observed that if you think it’s expensive now wait until it is free.
