On April 12, 1633 Galileo Galilei was convicted of heresy by the Roman Inquisition. He stood accused of refusing to accept the forward thinking position of the Papal establishment: specifically the geocentric model of the universe. Galileo supported the Copernican or heliocentric position that the sun was the center of the universe. History is silent as to whether Galileo ever argued the world was flat.
In 1543 Nicholas Copernicus published his argument that the sun was the center of the universe. In 1616 Pope Paul V added Copernicus’ “De Revolutionibus” to the list of banned books. Galileo supported the position of Copernicus and, as a result, was brought to Rome where the Pope instructed him to withdraw any public support for the heliocentric theory. For the benefit of students attending Emory University the heliocentric position turned out to be accurate.
When Galileo was convicted of heresy his book supporting Copernicus was banned. He was sentenced to prison and was to be held at the “will and pleasure” of the Church. It turned out that the “house arrest” of Galileo lasted until his death. All because he disagreed with the teachings of the Holy See, teachings that turned out to be incorrect. The Lord Cardinal Bellarmine was the prosecutor of Galileo before the Inquisition.
Fast forward to the 21st century. Pope Barack I has pronounced that anthropogenic global climate change is a greater threat than Islamist terrorism. Apparently it is heretical to disagree with the narcissist-in-chief. Especially when that narcissist is incredibly thin skinned. Enter stage left (from where else would an Obama appointee enter) the contemporary version of Lord Cardinal Bellarmine: Attorney General Loretta Lynch. Our fearless (and painfully ignorant) Attorney General has confirmed that she has discussed the possibility of pursuing civil actions against climate change deniers. Curious that the term man-made was omitted which is intriguing as there in no record of any denial that Fall becomes Winter each and every year which is, obviously, a change in the climate. Inquisitor Lynch has actually referred the question to the FBI to determine the criteria for such an action. This will require proving that human activity can distort the warp and woof of the planet earth…a tall order indeed.
In fact, two state attorneys general (Kamala Harris in California and Eric Schneiderman in New York) have already opened investigations to determine whether Exxon-Mobil has “lied” to the public and their share owners about climate change. I recommend the tape of the press conference in New York unless you suffer from coulrophobia. It is clear that the Federal and state governments want to muzzle anyone with the temerity to dissent from the politically correct zeitgeist. It would be funny if it were not such a threat to open and free dialogue.
In the private sector Michael Mann, author of the now discredited climate hockey stick, sued Mark Steyn for pronouncing Dr. Mann to be, in effect, a charlatan and mountebank. The usual response from Mann, whenever someone disagrees with him, is to accuse the heretic of being a tool of the oil industry. Such a charge would have been ludicrous with respect to Steyn so he is seeking to have the courts silence Steyn and, in addition, send a huge amount of money Mann’s way, no doubt to support his continuing chicanery. Rather than running like a thief in the night Steyn is fighting back and has published a wonderful book entitled “A Disgrace to the Profession”. It fairly well eviscerates the good doctor and the hockey stick. I recommend it to you for your reading pleasure understanding, of course, that the FBI could kick in your door as a climate change dissenter. Climate change deniers have been irrationally compared to Holocaust deniers…the Shoah was a reality whereas the alleged man-made climate change is a product of failed modeling.
So how did we arrive at this absurd reality? Why would the US Attorney General even consider such a clear violation of the First Amendment? Try this argument on for size. Pope Obama has shown that he is obsessed with being the “smartest” person in the room. There are two ways to do this: (1) make a phone booth the room or (2) actually be the smartest person in the room. Obama has accomplished the latter by surrounding himself with people he believes are not as smart as he is, a veritable carousel of mediocrity. Take, for example, his very first political appointment, his running mate and now Vice President Uncle Joe Biden. Biden has been described by a media executive as being “dumb as an ashtray”. I am assuming that the ashtray anti-defamation league is addressing this slander. In the past this ploy has worked well. The much maligned George W. Bush, when standing between Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi, was transformed into an Einstein level intellectual in comparison to the two Congresspeople.
This also explains the cabinet selections of the President, e.g. Hilliary Clinton, Eric Holder, John Kerry and the aforementioned Loretta Lynch. When seated at the table with his assembled cabinet Obama, as if by magic, becomes the smartest person in the room. I can only assume that attendance is strictly controlled so as to maintain this illusion.
In any case it is an outrage that the Federal government would even consider muzzling those who disagree with the fraud that is man-made global climate change. People like Al Gore fear dissent because their positions are so tenuous and are way beyond their intellectual pay grade. In fact most advocates of the global climate change position simply refuse to debate anyone who disagrees relying instead on the mindless response: “the science is settled”. It is, however, anything but settled. The Pavlovian types (e.g.Gore) cite a study that showed that 97% of the “climate scientists” agree that human activity was causing climate change. It turns out that this “study” was an on-line survey of some 10,500 earth scientists. In the end they took 77 responses of which 75 agreed that man had adversely impacted global climate and, presto, 97% of the science community supports their silly proposition. It was embarrassing when they trotted out the hapless head of the Sierra Club who, no matter the question, cited the “consensus”, the 97% who support the argument that is his security blanket. He was, as an animal loving member of the Sierra Club, a deer in the headlights.
Read the book “State of Fear” by Michael Crichton. Crichton challenges the proposition that climate change is an significant issue. He also demonstrates the truth of Twain’s observation: “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics”.
If we allow Attorney General Lynch to proceed with this inquisition we deserve to become a second rate power ruled by a cadre of people who refuse to respect and defend the Constitution.
