Ronald Reagan provided one of the most sagacious observations about liberals/progressives: It is not what liberals don’t know, it is what they know that is wrong. The entire Progressive movement is predicated on the ignorance of the practitioners and their mindless followers. This adoration of ignorance explains liberal/progressive opposition to any meaningful improvement to the US public school system (say for example vouchers for the poor in the inner city). If you actually taught people to think and provided a proper factual background on which to base that thinking most people would reject the policies espoused by the likes of Obama and Hilliary. Let’s explore some examples.
Progressive premise: Cutting taxes benefits only the rich, increases annual deficits and, at best, trickles down to the masses. In fact the opposite is true. Lawrence Kudlow and Brian Domitrovic have recently published a must read book entitled: JFK and the Reagan Revolution, A Secret History of American Prosperity. In the last 100 years three Presidents have secured major reductions in the Federal tax rate…Coolidge, Kennedy and Reagan. In each case the economy grew significantly and Federal tax revenues rose dramatically. In fact, following the Reagan tax cuts tax revenues almost doubled.
It is interesting to note that the Kennedy family and many associated with the Kennedy administration have taken people to task for even suggesting that Kennedy was a tax cutter. He reduced the highest tax rate from 91% to 65%! They have made every effort to read the truth tellers out of the liberal movement. Not only do they embrace ignorance but they force feed it to the world.
Progressive premise: The Clinton administration was responsible for the budget surpluses of the 1990’s. To believe this requires a stunning, almost Ginsburgesque, lack of understanding of the Constitutional system in the US. Prior to the mid-term elections in 1994 Clinton acknowledged that there would be significant deficits for the foreseeable future. Fortunately in 1994 the electorate put the Republican Party in charge of the US Congress. So on top of the increased tax revenues resulting from the Reagan tax cuts the House of Representatives (Constitutionally responsible for all spending bills) held the growth in Federal spending to the inflation rate. As if by magic (liberals call it voodoo economics) there were surpluses for a number of years. Perhaps at that point you would assume that the government would find a way to return all or part of that surplus to the taxpayers. You would be wrong because Clinton took time off from harassing the White House interns to suggest that it would not go to the people because they could not be counted on to spend the windfall responsibly.
Progressive premise: The Great Depression was caused by unbridled capitalism and George W Bush. In fact, Milton Friedman has made it clear that the Depression was triggered by the monetary policies of the Federal Reserve which contracted the money supply to slow the economy down. Deflation and the contraction that followed caused the market crash in 1929. Then the benighted Hoover administration secured passage of the Hawley Smoot Tariff Act which helped extend the depression to the rest of the world. In short the Depression was caused and exacerbated by the actions of the Federal government and…
Progressive premise: Franklin Ponzi Roosevelt (FPR) ended the Depression and saved the US government. The Depression was not brought under control by the policies of Roosevelt. In fact every time Roosevelt had a choice between a program that would have addressed the causes and adverse impact of the Depression and a program that would make it worse he unerringly chose the latter. The entire premise of the FPR defenders is that but for his actions the US would have become a communist state. Of course you cannot prove or disprove that argument but it was embraced without question by the ignorant who elected FPR four times. Read The Forgotten Man by Amity Shlaes for the definitive treatment of the topic.
Progressive premise: The real estate collapse of 2007-8 was caused by the greed of the large banks and George W Bush. In fact the lending institutions had been forced by the Federal government to provide mortgages to a significant number of people who could not possibly meet the financial obligations of the loans that they had received. Normal lending controls were abandoned because the government threatened banks with legal penalties because they had allegedly “discriminated” against minorities when making housing loans. This included the government backed agencies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac which engaged in corrupt practices so they could pat themselves on the back for insuring a vast number of the bad loans. Many loans ended up as valuable as Solyndra stock.
Progressive premise: Health care is a right. You cannot have a “right” that imposes a burden on a third party. You have the right to free speech but not the right to be heard. The entire farce that is Obamacare is predicated on this so-called “right”. Try walking into a hospital and demanding to be treated because it is your “right”! The hospital would charge you several thousand dollars just to diagnose your ignorance. The good news for liberals under Obamacare is that sutupidity is a preexisting condition.
Progressive premise: Obamacare is a viable and popular program. One needs only to track the President’s many promises to understand the failure of the program. Obama promised an average savings of $2500 per family but as it turns out that the average cost has in fact increased by more than that $2500. Many of the state exchanges have closed and a number of health care providers have abandoned Obamacare. The program is under water financially and the cost of care has risen across the board. Hint: When demand goes up because people think it is free costs will rise! The mantra that “if you like your doctor and your plan you can keep them” was a blatant prevarication. At no point has Obamacare been supported by even 50% of the American people.
Progressive premise: Global warming is a bigger threat than Islamist terrorism. Anthropogenic global warming is the biggest scientific and political fraud in US history. The fastest way to make a financial killing is to go short on any prediction made by Al Gore or the IPCC. The answer, they say, is solar and wind energy. As Jay Leno said: If you want to close GITMO make it a solar energy company and it will be out of business in six months.
Progressive premise: If a pregnant woman can simply crawl across the border to give birth the child will automatically become a US citizen. The 14th Amendment was intended to ensure that the recently freed slaves would not be punished by the Democrat party going forward so they provided in the amendment that individuals that had been born in the United States would be US citizens. This provision applied only retroactively to the slaves born in the US. It was never intended to apply future immigrants who happened to be born on US soil.
Progressive premise: The economy is doing just great, thank you for asking. Please disregard the reduction in average income thanks to the importation of all the cheap labor from south of the border. Apparently the Progressives are unaware of the law of supply and demand. If you increase the supply of labor the cost of that labor (wages) will go down…but Nancy Pelosi will get her watercress at bargain rates thanks to all those low wage immigrants that have been brought in to pick our produce. Note that Black teenage unemployment is somewhere in the neighborhood of 40%…coincidence?
Progressive premise: Pass a minimum wage law and the water will raise all the boats in the harbor. Sadly those people fortunate enough to live in places like Seattle ($15 per hour minimum wage) have seen jobs disappear as businesses close because they cannot afford to pay the minimum wage. Even common core math cannot make zero hours at $15 per hour a living wage. The real kicker is that the consumers choose not to lend support by paying the higher prices required to cover the increased wages…shocker.
Progressive premise: (Some) Black lives matter. Enough said!
Tragically most of the so-called millennials buy the Progressive premises hook, line and sinker. They are products of an education system that has stagnated and essentially stopped teaching their “customers” to think critically and which generates propaganda rather than facts. Public school graduates are risk averse and uninformed…they are being kept ignorant and readily to imbibe the bromides of our elected leaders.
