From time to time there are events that disrupt what was the steady cultural and economic advance of Western Civilization from the Dark Ages to the Enlightenment. The French Revolution was perhaps the worst of these events. It was driven by humanist impulses and resulted in the separation of government from any moral foundation. It unleashed the worst instincts of those who wish to govern us. Robespierre was the inevitable culmination of the Revolution and he was a monster, a precursor of Hitler, Lenin and Mao…autocrats devoid of any morality, incapable of understanding the human condition, unable to understand the nightmares they were unleashing. The state became unmoored from its historic religious and moral foundation.
In addition the state was determined to create a classless societal structure with the intent of erasing all that distinguishes one citizen from another. The French Revolutionary leaders became the great levelers such that Louis XVI died not as the king but as Citizen Capet. They actually believed that the human animal was capable of being perfected. This amoral governmental structure and the forced “equality” are what animated Karl Marx and his sponsor Frederich Engels which resulted in the Communist Manifesto and the Marxist-Leninist revolution that led to the death of more than a hundred million people in the 20th Century. Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot and Lon Nol were the legacy of the French Revolution.
The Nazis were another left wing tyranny that practiced the principles of the French Revolution. Like the French in the 1790’s and the Communists of the 20th century (not to mention Bill DiBlasio) the Nazis were intolerant of dissent. The masses were subject to tyrannical whims and were barred from embracing even the most basic of liberties. One of the linchpins of the Nazi propaganda machine was one Joseph Goebbels the brilliant propagandist who lived by one fundamental principle: “If you repeat a lie often enough, people will believe it, and you will even come to believe it yourself.”
In short Goebbels was an early sign that CNN was inevitable. He was a practitioner of fake news. Had Goebbels had access to the mass media and the electronic age there might, indeed, have been a thousand year Reich. Happily the democratic nations were able to defeat the Nazis and the Communists and recapture the dream manifested by the United States…perhaps temporarily as it appears.
Fast forward to the post-Trump world. We now have a militant opposition driven by ignorance and hatred and, sadly, a complete lack of morality. News outlets repeat lies often enough that they actually come to believe their own propaganda. In their fevered minds the fake news becomes the truth and no evidence to the contrary is offered or accepted.
Take the simple assertion that the Russians “hacked” the 2016 election. If you had a nickel for every time the media or the left referred to the 17 intelligence agencies that agreed that the Russians cost Hilliary the election you would become the next Zuckerberg. Dr. Pavlov call your office! That statistic became an article of faith until…well someone had to admit that (a) only three intelligence agencies had even opined on the topic and (b) there really was no evidence that the Russians hacked much of anything. The new data did not even slow them down.
And how about the constant allegation that the Republicans healthcare alternative to the Unaffordable Care Act was an exercise in partisanship, crafted behind closed doors and designed to kick 20 million people out of the healthcare system. In short they were describing the way Obamacare was drafted and passed. And Obamacare has managed to remove 28 million people from the healthcare system. Remember the famous Nancy Pelosi quote: “We Have to Pass the Bill So That You Can Find Out What Is In It.”
It was passed without a single Republican vote in Congress nor were the Republicans asked to participate in the drafting of the legislation…partisanship anyone! The Republicans actually made their bill public for review and comment…imagine that.
The CBO scoring of the Republican bill was much ballyhooed by the Democrats. However it is instructive to review the accuracy of the CBO scoring of Obamacare. They didn’t even get it close. They predicted more than 20 million people would avail themselves of Obamacare but the total was closer to 11 million. Try finding that data point among the scathing attacks on the Republican plan. But it gets repeated over and over and the sheeple lap it up like mother’s milk. If you ever wanted evidence of the abject failure of American education check the Democrats voters or Susan Rice.
Listen to the solemn analysis of the 2016 election. The Russians have apparently destroyed the integrity of the US election process. Listen to the left wing mockingbirds lament the alleged attack on the most sacred of all the rights of Americans…the right to have their votes count. Then watch the Democrats fight any attempt to actually preserve the integrity of the voting process. Voter ID…racist! Cleaning up the voter rolls to eliminate the dead or people who are registered in more than one voting district…waste of time! Set up a commission to determine how many ineligible voters cast ballots in 2016 and you would think someone wanted to, well, keep illegal immigrants from voting. Trump said that 3 million votes were cast by ineligible voters and he has been roundly criticized. Here’s an idea…let’s prove him wrong by actually checking. Opposition to this idea suggests there is much to hide.
Fake news is bad but ignoring the news is worse. The IRS is the most powerful organization in the US. When the IRS was established there were critics who feared that it would become a political tool. FPR and LBJ used the IRS to punish political enemies. Much was made of the so-called Nixon enemies list and it was feared that he was using the IRS for political purposes. No evidence has ever been offered to prove that point. Fast forward to the administration of Obama the Pious. Lois Lerner used the IRS to punish Obama’s political enemies and hid behind the Fifth Amendment when she was called to testify. We got nothing but silence from the MSM Democrat cheerleaders. Now if Trump were to suggest that IRS audit scofflaws like Al Sharpton and Charlie Rangel not only would we be treated to dark suggestions of a Gestapo rebirth but there would claims of racism to boot. Of all of the many scandals of the Obama team this was the most heinous.
Yet the media is focused, laser like, on the fact that Trump did not disavow by name each of the 500 Nazis in the US. And the fact that he had the temerity to suggest that the anarchists of the fascist antifa movement and (Some) Black Lives Matter were engaged in violent protests you would have thought that Satan himself was working in the Oval Office. The (Some) Black Lives Matter group marches in the street chanting “What do we want? Dead cops! When do we want them? Now” and they get invited to the White House! Has David Duke dined with Trump recently?
So we live today with the disastrous effects of the French Revolution. Moral equivalence. The perpetuation of ignorance which makes the people more easily manipulated. The divisive practices of the left…Obama set race relations back 50 years. And there is, of course, the overwhelming disdain for Christians and Jews confirming that we are unmoored from our moral foundation.
Robespierre is alive and well and living amidst the Democrats and their media megaphones.
