The Death of Civil Debate

The TV show Firing Line was the classic example of the face to face debate format. William Buckley would be a moderator in today’s political arena but he was regarded as the face of the Conservative movement when his show was on the air. Each week he would invite a guest who “disagreed” with him and they would duke it out verbally. With the exception of his debate with Gore Vidal the discussions were erudite and civil. The only thing you needed to follow the discussion was a dictionary.

Today there is no outlet that promotes intelligent civil debate of the issues. Chuck Todd bans any guest who would disagree with him on man-made climate change and CNN disregards any opposing ideas presumably because they do not have the intellectual fire power to defend their own positions. The result is little or no balance in the presentation of issues that will impact America’s future. A recent study reached what must have been seen by most observers as a shocking conclusion. Fox is the most balanced of the news outlets. Despite these empirical data Fox is routinely criticized by the left as a tool of the Trump administration.

This is a study done by Harvard which cannot, even facetiously, be considered to be to the right of socialism.

Political debate today is dominated by offensive name calling. It has been said that if Pavlov had Democrats he would not have needed dogs. The best example of reflexive pejorative response by the left is the term “racist”. It is a one size fits all condemnation. But what does racism actually mean and is its impact being diminished because of the elasticity of application.

Dr. Webster defines racism as: a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines it as: The belief that all members of each race possess characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.

Wikipedia defines racism as the belief in the superiority of one race over another, which often results in discrimination and prejudice towards people based on their race or ethnicity, though some have argued the term is more nuanced than that.

The Democrat party definition of the term is based almost entirely on irrationality. There is no need to actually argue that someone believes in the superiority of one race over another. If you failed to vote for Obama you might be a racist. If you point out his misrepresentations regarding Obamacare you could be a racist. If you suggest that Ilhan Omar is manifestly ignorant based on her, well, ignorance, you can be classified as a racist. If you question AOC or her posse you are showing racist tendencies. In short, if you disagree with someone on the left you are likely a racist and should be condemned accordingly.

They resort to this name calling because they are unable, intellectually, to defend their political positions. They clearly hope that crying racism will intimidate and shame their opponents. They see life as a quest for participation awards and their arguments depend on large injections of squid ink rather than reason. They believe that the accusation of racism insulates them from any responsibility for anything they do and say. No matter how stupid what they do or say might be.

And as Democrats they should be able to identify real racism based on the party’s rich history of white supremacy and racism. See, for example the utterances of Senators Richard Russell or Theodore Bilbo. Research the positions taken by Woodrow Wilson and George Wallace. Check the lineage of the Ku Klux Klan. Study the roster of Democrat public officials twho worked tirelessly to derail the integration of Southern schools.

Donald Trump, on the other hand, has been in the public eye for more than three decades and there was not a suggestion that he was a white supremacist or racist until it became clear he would win the 2016 election. Rest assured that the crack research teams of Democrat supporters and their allies in social media have combed every statement or document related to Trump for “proof” of his racism. They have, of course, produced nothing. So on January 20, 2017 he became a target of every unsubstantiated slur or accusation related to racism. But doesn’t the lack of any proof suggest that Trump may not, in fact, be a racist?

The next time you hear a member of loony left call someone a fascist or a Nazi ask them to define those terms as they are not one and the same. Try to record the responses as they will be worthy of submission to the Comedy Channel. Witness the fact that they are unable identify real Nazis…such as Antifa. These thugs are the modern equivalent of Hitler’s Brown Shirts. They are cowards who run like thieves in the night when they are confronted by someone other than a diminutive gay reporter as we saw in Portland.

Fascism is an economic philosophy that was embraced by FDR and was the basis for much of the New Deal. It should be noted that in 2016 there was actually a fascist running for President…Hilliary Clinton. A Nazi is a national socialist and, strictly speaking, the majority of the Democrat candidates for the party’s presidential nomination are Nazis as they all espouse national socialism. They do try to put a smiley face on their efforts to destroy our economy but intelligent people should not be fooled.

So why do they refuse to respond when the opposition calls out their ignorant arguments and the idiotic policies they propose? It is simple…they fear serious confrontation. The DNC wraps all their candidates in a soothing cocoon to ensure no feathers will be ruffled. They will not allow any debate moderators who are not sycophantic supporters of the party. Heaven forfend that they allow a person from a balanced network like Fox to bring serious discussion to the debate. There is no effort to encourage the candidates to defend their ideas.

The Democrats want the right to throw insults at those they oppose while demanding protection from any real or imagined challenger. All they have to do is show any example of Socialism actually working as advertised or explain why millions of people want to emigrate to the nightmare that is 21st century America. These are two things they are incapable of doing and it diminishes the ability of voters to make a rational decision when they vote. Is that the real goal?

  1. Your point about Donald Trump being accused of a white supremacist or a racist after he won the 2016 election is very important. Another thing to think about is Donald Trump being called a sexist. The thing I love about that is Donald Trump has a very large amount of woman that voted for him in the 2016 election and even more are going to vote for him in 2020. So if Donald Trump is sexist, why are so many woman voting for him. As you put in your writing, he is also called a racist. The black unemployment rate dropped by 2 percent from 2016 to 2018. It was at an all time low since around the 1970’s. This is all because he brought jobs back to the United States. But even after all of this he is still a racist and sexist. It blows my mind what the left does all because Hillary Clinton lost the race. If Republicans did what the left is doing when Obama was in office, we would get in so much trouble. It is time for the left wing leaders to stand up and control their party.
