A Progressive 4th of July: Declaration of Dependence

The trend line for the last 50 years has been toward an increased dependence on our government masters.  The progressives have created an entitlement flypaper which, once touched, is almost impossible to escape.  We have created an entrenched, structural poverty in our country.  We have created a fear of anything we aren’t comfortable with.  We have created a need for safe spaces.  All of which requires constant breast feeding from the Federal teat.  The progressives are more than happy to provide the teat.  Unfortunately what the sucklers fail to grasp is that those who provide the milk call the tune.

The poor offer the best example.  There is very little in the coffers of the poor, especially the inner-city poor, but they invariably pass on to the heirs a legacy of poverty and lost opportunity.  Many trillions of dollars have been “invested” in the so-called War on Poverty.  Sadly poverty is winning.  Even more depressing is the fact that the left, the progressive class, sees this as an opportunity to spike the ball in the end zone, a success worth celebrating.  Democrats campaign for elective office by sowing fear…vote for a Republican and you will lose your entitlements.  Vote for a Republican and another Black church will burn.  After the election of Trump, even before he took office, the “protected” classes expressed a fear of what was going to to happen to them under the new regime.  It was immaterial that Obama had done nothing to improve the situation and did a lot to make it worse because the dependent classes are programmed to believe that the world will end if there is even the remotest possibility that their security blankets will be taken away.  All the fears are baseless but Ivan Pavlov is smiling somewhere.

For more than a century after the passage of the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments it was an article of faith that Black Americans were simply not capable of managing their lives.  This led to a paternalistic attitude among many whites, especially Democrats.  It was a justification for their racist philosophy…separate but equal, segregation and voter suppression.  This fostered a dependence mentality among Blacks and that attitude has driven Democrat policy ever since.  The Great Society was the sine qua non of the Declaration of Dependence.

It has now spread to the millenials.  They have come to see the government as their protector and provider.  Young people today think nothing of living in their parent’s basements after graduating from high school or college or of being carried on their parents health insurance until they are 26.  They see this as an entitlement and the progressives see this as an extension of the paternalism of government.  Student loans are another example of the government’s economic control over young people.  These programs create a debtor class which, in turn, makes the debtors more susceptible to control by the government and it limits their ability to achieve personal or economic independence.  We do have an opiate issue in America…and it starts with the addiction to government protections. In an exercise in double talk the Democrats have stopped referring to “regulations” preferring to call them “protections”…protections from what exactly…economic growth?

Young single women apparently live in fear that without the welfare state they will be forever disadvantaged.  This is especially true of women who are single parents.  And as single parents tend to live at or near the poverty level and are more dependent on government transfer payments they have, in fact, limited the possibility of achieving economic success. They supported Santa Sanders and/or Hilliary overwhelmingly because of the promise of succor from the enabling state.

The LGBTQIA community genuinely believes that they would be under assault were it not for the protections offered by a benevolent government.  Milo Yiannopoulos, who is himself openly gay, is accused by the LGBTQIA community of being a bigot and a fascist.  There is no need to try to defend this idiocy! Try to find an example of an assault on the gay community.  That would be akin to seeking evidence of collusion between Trump and Putin in 2016…fruitless!

These groups are the foundation of the Democrat party and the aim of the Democrats is to maintain a level of dependence that will translate into fear during every election cycle.

There are several recent manifestations of this progressive mindset.  A guest on Tucker Carlson’s show, Bishop Dwayne Royster, called the proposed “Republican”budget an exercise in ethnic cleansing.  This can only be described as an exercise in Jabberwocky.  Ethnic cleansing is defined as the “systematic forced removal of ethnic or religious groups from a given territory by a more powerful ethnic group, with the intent of making it ethnically homogeneous.”  It is impossible to make an intelligent argument that the proposed budget is a program for ethnic cleansing and the good Bishop confirmed that impossibility.   But it helps if you understand that the argument is driven by his desire to protect the cycle of dependence that has enslaved certain groups that will never be able to escape the protective cloak of Federal beneficence.  One cannot help but ask what ethnic or religious groups have been targeted by the budget.  And what is the ethnically homogeneous goal?  This is a wonderful example of the mental stultification that accompanies the cycle of dependence.

Now listen to the hysteria that is being exercised by the Democrats in response to the recently introduced Senate healthcare bill.  Racing to the nearest microphone was the Mad Hatter of the Democrats, Elizabeth Warren.  Warren’s comments are perfectly described by Laura Ingram who suggested, following a sound bite by Maxine Waters, that it was difficult to diagram one of her sentences.  Apparently trying to control healthcare costs is “blood money” and that people will die.  This bit of incoherence plays well with the dependent class but defies intelligent analysis.  Obamacare was a massive effort to expand the ability of the government to control Americans and any effort to deal with the collapse of the Unaffordable Care Act is, according to Warren’s inane analysis, an attack on the people.  Any sensible person must be weeping openly.

One thing the left hates about Trump is that he is not docile.  He encourages individual responsibility and initiative.  This terrifies the progressives and their flock of sheep.  Before you know it they will be moving out of their basements and, heaven forfend, listening to radical ideas such as the free market and capitalism.

I recently read an apt description of Theodore Roosevelt (and it can be applied to most progressives including Obama):  TR felt he should be the bride at every wedding, the corpse at every funeral and the baby at every christening.

  1. You have given us another enlightened, well written article. Thank you for helping us to consider the state of things.
The only solace I can find when I see some of the petulance of the young unteachables is that they aren’t all like that.
I think the dependence plantation masters are worried about Trump trampling out all of their grapes of sloth. Anyone who can stand in front of a TV camera, to the beat of gunfire at Republican house members, and say that changes in healthcare will cause hundreds of thousands will die, is a few rounds short of a full clip.
History does not give a lot of comfort when pondering this nation’s future course. Americans are exceptional people and perhaps we can turn the dependence juggernaut around.
